How to use the BMR calculator

Enter your sex, age, height and weight in metric or imperial units. The calculator returns your BMR — the calories you burn at rest — and a table of total daily calories for five activity levels. Pick the row that matches your week to find the calories you actually use.

The Mifflin-St Jeor formula

Men: BMR = 10·kg + 6.25·cm − 5·age + 5
Women: BMR = 10·kg + 6.25·cm − 5·age − 161

Example. A 30-year-old man, 175 cm and 70 kg: 10×70 + 6.25×175 − 5×30 + 5 = 1,649 calories at rest. Multiply by an activity factor (1.2 to 1.9) to get total daily calories.

Frequently asked questions

Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest just to keep you alive — breathing, circulating blood, and maintaining organs. It is the largest part of most people's daily calorie use.
