How the unit price is worked out
Unit price is just price divided by amount, after converting every item to one common unit:
unit price = price ÷ amount (in a common unit)
Worked example. Three packs of the same product, compared per kilogram:
Item A — $4.50 for 500 g$9.00 / kg
Item B — $7.00 for 1 kg$7.00 / kg — best
Item C — $2.50 for 250 g$10.00 / kg
The smallest pack (C) is the cheapest to buy but the worst value — it costs 43% more per kilogram than the 1 kg pack.
Smart-shopping tips
- Read the shelf label. Many shops print a unit price, but they do not always use the same unit across brands — check it matches.
- Watch ‘multibuy’ deals. “3 for $5” is only a saving if the per-unit price beats the single pack.
- Mind the packaging. Drained weight (for tinned food) can differ from the pack weight — compare like with like.
- Bigger is usually — not always — better. Always confirm with the unit price.
